Student Rep’s Corner

By Allison Bryant

Hello ASP! The 100th meeting of the American Society of Parasitologists is almost here! I am so excited about all the awesome presentations that will be given in Winston-Salem in July and I can’t wait to see and hear them. As the Student Representative, it is my job to organize the Student Symposium. This year, I’m collaborating with other parasitologists to put on a symposium which deals with the topic of parasite conservation and how we, as parasitologists and other scientists, can benefit from parasites in captivity and parasite reintroductions.

The ASP community has been very supportive of its students, and I hope all students are excited for the upcoming ASP meeting! If you are a student new to parasitology and you are looking to grow a supportive community but are nervous about a large national meeting, I recommend going to regional meetings! There are many Regional Societies affiliated with the American Society of Parasitology, and their meetings are a great place to get feedback and support for your research without the stress of a national meeting. These Regional Societies have been very supportive of my research and have offered me many resources to grow both as a student and a parasitologist. And in addition, while attending your regional meetings you get to meet a number of parasitologists that commonly attend both the regional meetings and our national ASP meeting each year.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out and I hope to see everyone in Winston-Salem, NC July 7-10th!
