In the American Society of Parasitologists, a person elected as Vice President is actually elected to hold 4 positions, each for 1 year. In the first year, they are Vice President. After that, they transition to President-Elect, then President, and then Immediate Past President. Below are messages from the President, President-Elect, and Vice President.
President - Sara Brant
It has already been a productive start to being President of our society! I am very excited about our leadership team and we are lucky because they are all willing to make some good changes and listen to what YOU all want from ASP. And that is what we are looking for, ways to keep you all connected to what we do in Council and how we can work more as a team. We are working on integrating our new Secretary Treasurer, Tami Cook, into the leadership team to follow a great job by Lee Couch over the last 9 years. We are all interested in taking stock of what we do and why, and how to make it more transparent and work for what makes up the current ASP membership. And we are very interested to know how we can better serve you. Reg, Anindo, and Kelly have been amazing on this journey of shared goals for ASP, I am honored. Be vocal, but be patient as we try out some new stuff in the coming year and next meeting! Our inboxes are always open to you! Email: sbrant@unm.edu
President-Elect - Anindo Choudhury
Hello everybody! I am excited to serve as your President-Elect and future President. I too look forward to working with all of you this coming year and the next. I share Sara’s and Kelly's goals for our society. In particular, I would like to see us grow, flourish and support a diverse group of parasitology enthusiasts and professionals all across the Americas. I am interested in strengthening ties and building meaningful partnerships with regional societies to enrich our beloved subject and help students and early career professionals to become better invested in our society. I look forward to seeing you at the 2025 meeting in Winston-Salem. Please reach out if you have any questions, ideas or just want to connect: anindo.choudhury@snc.edu
Vice President - Kelly Weinersmith
Hi! I’m excited to be starting my 4-year term, and would love to hear from you! Please feel free to send me an email (KLW5@rice.edu), or introduce yourself if you see me at a Helminthological Society of Washington or ASP meeting. I’m very interested in hearing what ASP is doing that is working well for you, and what you’d like to see us change.
Personally, I’m interested in exploring options for our annual meeting. The costs for holding a meeting have been increasing, but we understand that raising costs of things like registration or hotel rooms are difficult for many of us to afford. I’ve been hearing from folks at all stages of their careers that conference expenses often come out of their own pockets, which is true for me as well. Some options to explore which could cut down on expenses include things like holding the annual meeting at a casino, reducing the number of days during which we hold the meeting, or holding a meeting at the same place each year (which may allow us to lock in a better deal at that particular hotel). If you have any thoughts on this issue, I’d love to hear them.
