The Biology of the Coccidia (Apicomplexa) of Snakes of the World

The Biology of the Coccidia (Apicomplexa) of Snakes of the World
A Scholarly Handbook for Identification and Treatment
By Donald W. Duszynski Ph.D., Steve J. Upton Ph.D.

This book uses the most current taxonomy and terminology of snakes (Uetz, 2005) and summarizes for the reader all the current knowledge, through 2008, about all coccidia species ever reported from serpentines. With about 8 million homes in the USA that have snakes as pets, their owners and veterinarians alike should welcome this easily-read and informative book. Special chapters on Sarcocystis and Cryptosporidium in snakes, along with a chapter on chemotherapy and treatment of coccidiosis in snakes are especially useful. Also included are both host-parasite and parasite-host tables and a glossary of the more technical termsfor quick cross-referencing.

About the author:

Donald Duszynski has been on the faculty of the University of New Mexico since 1970. He has developed an international reputation as an expert on the taxonomy and systematics of the coccidia of all classes of vertebrates. His 25 former graduate students, including co-author Steve Upton, have published >550 papers, book chapters and books, many dealing directly with the biology, taxonomy and systematics of coccidia. His own work of >170 published manuscripts and book chapters include the most recent treatises on coccidia found in amphibians, mammals (bats, insectivores, rodents, primates) and now snakes.

Steve Upton has been on the faculty of Kansas State University since 1986. During that time, he has developed an international reputation as an expert in Cryptosporidium biology and the coccidia of lower vertebrates, especially amphibians and reptiles. He has published >220 papers in refereed journals and is currently assembling a list of all coccidia in the world.
